    Steering Committee Member

    Tova Perlmutter has served since 2006 as Executive Director of the Detroit-based Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice, an NLG-affiliated national nonprofit dedicated to defending and expanding the legal rights of working people and their communities.

    Tova has 25 years experience in communications, fundraising, administration and public education for nonprofit organizations. Before coming to Sugar Law, she was an independent consultant helping nonprofits systematically plan and implement activities to meet their strategic objectives. Tova obtained professional certification as a Senior Human Resources Professional while working to promote fair employment practices at a major corporation. She has been responsible for designing and monitoring many projects aimed at empowering people and attracting press coverage to social justice efforts.

    A graduate of Harvard University, Tova earned a master's degrees at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Michigan, and conducted doctoral research there on ethnic and racial politics in American cities. She has also completed specialized professional programs on multicultural leadership, emerging nonprofit leaders, effective project management and business process improvement.

    Tova's volunteer work includes serving as a board member and finance committee chair for Michigan Coalition for Human Rights; serving on the National Lawyers Guild Labor and Employment Committee Steering Committee; and playing a local and national leadership role in Jewish Voice for Peace.

    In March 2011, Tova was Keynote Speaker at Adrian College's Conference on Women's Diversity, speaking on "Power and Privilege: Why Justice Demands More Than Diversity" (reprinted in the National Lawyers Guild Review, Volume 67, No.4; June 2011).
