    HEARING on Methyl Iodide

Assembly Member William Monning secured over 20 signatures from Assembly colleagues on a letter sent to the Governor and the head of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation [DPR] to block a fast tracked registration of methyl idodide.  Click here for the letter sent by the Assembly Members.

Methyl idodide is a pesticide that is potentially more harmful to health than the pesticide methyl bromide, which was outlawed by the US EPA in 2005.  Methyl iodide was developed to replace methyl bromide which was not only dangerous to health, but also a serious environmental threat required to e phased out "under an international treaty designed to protect the Ozone Layer" according to the DPR.  Although methyl iodide doesn't pose the same environmental risk, it poses an equal or greater risk to workers and to community members exposed to it as it is prone to drift.  Methyl idodide is a known carcinogen.
